Impressionism
The theme of my series is the mystery of nature. Life, growth, and death are all encompassed in my photo series. All of the photos are of nature: jetty of rocks into mouth of harbor, single plant with flowers blooming, small wooden pier on a river, and reaching tree branches over waterscape. I have an overlay of plant roots in two of the photos that show growth in nature. The remaining two photos are overlaid with textures, such as a grainy textures. The black vignette on the edges of one of the photos creates a dark, spooky mood. The photos are gray or darkened to convey death within my series.
My favorite image from the series is the picture of the jetty with the sunset over water. I overlaid an image of a plant root that was taken in class. I used a black vignette on the edges of the photograph. Then I took a brush with black color, and drew across the top of the picture. I lowered the opacity to allow the sky with the sun to still be seen. The black paint created a haze over the sun so instead of a happy, calm mood, the picture conveys a dark, mysterious mood. The leading line of the edge of the jetty leads the viewer’s eyes diagonally up towards the top left corner of the picture. The manipulations that worked well are the overlay and the vignette. The vignette encloses the photo so the viewer focuses on the center of the picture. The root overlay adds a new element to the picture. The water, roots, and rocks work well together because the photo gives the impression of the water giving life to the roots that are growing out of the rocks, towards the sunlight. |
