The subject matter of the diptych is the fog over water in the left picture and a sunset over water in the right picture. The photo on the left was originally vertical and the one on the right was originally horizontal, however I cropped both to be square. The line going through the center of the photograph matches in both, so the line leads the viewer from the left photo into the right photo. Both photos have a middle ground of the horizon and background of the fog in the left picture and sunset in the right picture. The subject matter throughout the whole diptych is of water, which unifies the picture conceptually. The left and right photographs contrast in what they convey. The foggy picture gives an eerie mood of things unknown, while the picture of the sunset gives a calming sense to the viewer.
